Clearly confused penguins?

A conversation between two GNU/Linux users on the nature and purpose of a user group they are about to start.

penguin1: Hi..
penguin1: I am writing content for the home page...
penguin1: I find it a bit strange to have FSF ideology and other technologies on the same page..
penguin1: I think this is a fundamental conflict we have to resolve before going ahead...
penguin1: If ppl are going to talk abt Linux and apex in the same vein, I think we will be doing a disservice to GNU.
penguin1: What do u feel?
penguin1: same vein as in same spirit..
penguin2: is this group going to promote ideology of FSF or just awareness of technology?
penguin1: i am confused abt that.
penguin2: if it is going to be a tech group as penguin3 prefers, we cannot promote the ideology of FSF
penguin1: What I aim to promote is sharing of knowledge....
penguin1:
penguin2: but ideology of FSF is not the same as Linux, right?
penguin1: not exactly..
penguin1: but they are essentially the same.
penguin1: otherwise they wouldn't let linux live.
penguin2: i dont think they are essentially the same
penguin1: Linux was built on FSF's ideology... I don't think it is any different for all practical purposes.
penguin2: i don't think Linus Torvalds built the Linux kernel with FSF ideology in mind
penguin1: May be not.. But I do not care.. It was released under GPL.
penguin2: though he decided to distribute it under GPL
penguin1: carry on..
penguin2: if we restrict to FSF & GPL, we can't even talk about Apache
penguin2: even RedHat goes out
penguin2: the only disto we can talk about is debian
penguin1: I think apache's webserver is released under GPL...
penguin1: We can talk abt FOSS.
penguin1: Let's not restrict ourselves to GPL.
penguin2: http
penguin2: we can talk about FLOSS
penguin1: yeah..
penguin1: Abt Apache's licensing... The Apache Software Foundation is still trying to determine if this version of the Apache License is compatible with the GPL.
penguin1: The result is a license that is supposed to be compatible with other open source licenses, while remaining true to the original goals of the Apache Group and supportive of collaborative development across both nonprofit and commercial organizations.
penguin1: The point to be taken from this is that any effort to remain open is highly appreciated.
penguin1: As long as ppl contribute their source and let you modify & redistribute it, I am fine..
penguin2: yeah
penguin1: I am not very particular abt legal implications... Nor am I a legal expert.
penguin2: and for that reason i wud prefer it to be an informal unofficial group, that needn't have the blessings of our employer
penguin1: exactly.
penguin1: Wonder how we missed this point over lunch...
penguin2: becos we started talking abt whether we wanted it to be a tech group or linux group
penguin2: i feel that having it as a tech group will easily make it lose direction
penguin1: hmm... tech group will, in time, dissolve into separate groups.
penguin2: either dissolve into separate groups or dissolve to obscurity
penguin1: yeah..
penguin2: a linux group will be more focussed
penguin2: and we cud also accomodate other FLOSS group
penguin1: So, what I will do is this... I will put this chat log on our tuxangelist blog and invite comments from all interested ppl within here.
penguin2: or we cud just call it FLOSS group
penguin1: yeah.. We will be a FLOSS group.
penguin2: if someone does want to show case a non-FLOSS, then?
penguin2: like GWT development using eclipse
penguin2: or like installing and deploying an ejb app on weblogic in linux
penguin1: That's a prob... I agree... I don't have a proper solution..
penguin2: or some such stuff.. which is only marginally related to linux or FLOSS
penguin1: But ppl can take those discussions offline... Not as part of the group's meeting hours.
penguin2: true
penguin2: As of version 1.3, Google Web Toolkit is licensed under the Apache 2.0 open source license, which includes limitations of liability and disclaimers of warranty for the product. Please note that some included libraries may be licensed under other open source licenses listed here.
penguin1: You can help ur developer friend with C# or pl/sql.. Nothing wrong with that..
penguin2: http
penguin2: If you want to build GWT from source code, check out our build instructions. If you want to help contribute to GWT, check out Making GWT Better. For MD5 sums and downloads for other platforms (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux), see our complete download list.
penguin1: But inviting ppl to adopt it is
penguin1: good..
penguin2: as far GWT, it's not an issue
penguin2: no need to talk abt weblogic.. instead use JBOSS
penguin1: Apache 2.0 allows you to modify and redistribute it with a disclaimer and a copy of the original license..
penguin2: cool
